I went in for an appointment and had an IUD ordered. I was originally supposed to be an exam but it essentially turned into a consult to order the IUD because they wanted to bill a couple things together. I got the bill from my insurance provider about a week later and the price for the ~5 minute appointment was very high. I saw a nurse, not a medical doctor, so to me the price wasn't worth the visit.

I called about a week before the appointment to cancel and let them know the reason was because of the high cost of the office visit (I would have had to pay for 2 more visits had I gone through) Should have been simple, right? After the receptionist hung up on me, I got a few calls from people in the office. The first call I picked up and was from Keri and she wanted to confirm that I did in fact want to cancel. I said yes and explained to her that the appointment was too expensive and I was going to get it done at another office. She called again and this time I got the voicemail. I called the office back but Keri was seeing a patient so I asked for a call back and never got one.

This morning I got a call from Pam, the office manager, and she said that they would be billing me for the IUD that was never put in. They were going to bill the full amount of $750. That sounded like insurance fraud so I immediately called my lawyer for advice. Next, I called the insurance company and they said that A Woman's Place can't bill them for an IUD that was never put in. They said they would reject any claim A Woman's Place tried to file and also file an internal complaint against them so it would go on record.

I had the insurance representative call over to the office but she was unable to reach Pam. But the representative did talk to someone else in the office who said that I cancelled the appointment because my insurance wouldn't cover it. I then worked to verify their claim that the IUD couldn't be returned. So I called up Bayer and they said that the IUD could absolutely be returned if the package is unopened. I can't verify whether it had been or not but I never went to my appointment so it should not have.

Once I had this information, I called my insurance company back and they called A Woman's Place again. They got me on the line and I was able to speak to Pam. She said that someone in the office (but failed to identify a single name, just named the names of the people I spoke to) said that I had cancelled my appointment because insurance wouldn't cover it. Which is untrue because my insurance company has it on record that I called twice before my appointment to verify that the procedure would be covered. The problem is that A Woman's Place didn't bill my appointment as preventative (which covered 100%) like they should have and that's why I received a high bill in the first place. Pam also said that she had tried calling several times and couldn't get in touch with me. I did try to call Keri back the second time she called but never got a call back from her. The phone call today was the first time Pam personally reached out to me and it was to threaten me with a $750 bill. She wasn't happy that I called the insurance company first but I needed to get a neutral party involved as a witness.

In the end, the issue was resolved but I lost over 3 hours of work today to deal with this. I give my insurance company 5 stars for the way they handled this situation. I'm grudgingly giving A Woman's Place 1 star (should be 0) for the way they handled everything. Whether or not the threat to charge me was real, it was a bad move on their part. I'm in the process of submitting this information over to an agency that can look into their billing practices further to make sure that the services they provide match what they bill to insurance.
